Deck 9 Ecosystems 2.2 Classifying Organisms Flashcards
LS 2.2 Classifying Organisms within an Ecosystem
Producers
Living things that make their own food (energy)
(plants are producers.)
Consumers
Animals that do not make their own food, but obtain energy by eating other animals or plants.
Primary Consumers
Animals that eat primary producers: they are also called herbivores. (Plant-eaters)
Secondary Consumers
Animals that eat primary consumers. They are carnivores (meat eaters) and omnivores (animals that eat both animals and plants).
Tertiary consumers
Eat secondary consumers.
Decomposers
Organisms (plants and animals) that break down dead organisms and waste into nutrients that plants can use to grow and reproduce.
Food Chain
A model that shows how energy flows between living things in an ecosystem.
Food Web
A model that shows the many different food chains that exist in one ecosystem.
Classify
To organize things into categories based on their shared qualities or characteristics.
Relationship
How organisms interact in their environment.
Organism
Any living thing
Energy Transfer
The movement of energy from one organism to another through food webs. (One organism eats another, taking energy from what was eaten.)
