Deck 12-Earth's Systems- Weather 1.1 Flashcards
ES 1.1
Forecast
The prediction of the weather conditions for a given area at a given time
Weather Patterns
Periods of time when the weather stays the same for several days
Seasons
Four different times during the year with different types of weather
Cloud Cover
The amount of the sky covered by clouds
Climate
The average weather conditions over a long period of time
Rain Gauge
A tool that measures how much rain falls over a specific area over a period of time
Wind Vane
An instrument that measures the direction from which the wind is blowing
Anemometer
A tool that measures wind speed
Thermometer
A tool that measures temperature
Barometer
An instrument used to measure atmospheric pressure to help predict weather chances
High Pressure
An area on Earth’s surface where the atmospheric pressure is higher than the surrounding areas, causing air to sink and generally leading to clear skies and calm weather conditions
Low Pressure
An area where the atmospheric pressure is lower than the surrounding areas, causing air to rise and often leading to cloudy and stormy weather conditions
Temperature
The measure of hotness or coldness expressed in terms of several scales such as fahrenheit or celsius
Wind Direction
The direction from which the wind originates (Northerly winds come from the North)
Wind Speed
Speed of weather related air movement
Wind
The movement of air near Earth’s surface
Precipitation
Water that falls from the ground in form of rain, sleet, snow, hail or freezing rain
Weather
The conditions of the atmosphere at a specific time can change day to day
