Q

how to formulate a research problem

A
  1. identify a broad field or subject area
  2. familiarize yourself with the topic (literature, all different ways people look at the topic) end scope down
  3. identify the knowledge gaps, use regulative cycle for this
  4. formulate the research objective
  5. formulate research questions

Q

common mistakes in research questions

A
  • RQ’s are not well aligned with the internal objective (they either broaden or restrict the objective)
  • RQ’s are related to the external objective (ask how to solve the problem instead of asking a scientific question)
  • RQ’s are not researchable (desk questions, or aimed at changing the world)
  • key terms are already operationalized

Q

tips for identifying knowledge gaps

A
  • look at mediators (mechanisms in the effect of x on y)
  • look at moderators (effect of z on relationship)
  • look at the relationship in a different population (external validity)
  • measurement validity: look at dimensions of x
  • internal validity: control the confounders
