Deck 2 Flashcards
1
Q
research proposal
A
exists out of a conceptual and a technical design
2
Q
conceptual design
A
what are you trying to accomplish with your research?
consists of:
- objective
- questions
- conceptual framework
- conceptual operationalization
3
Q
technical design
A
How are you actually going to do your research?
consists of:
- study design
- sampling
- technical operationalization
- planning (time, money)
4
Q
how to formulate a research problem
A
- identify a broad field or subject area
- familiarize yourself with the topic (literature, all different ways people look at the topic) end scope down
- identify the knowledge gaps, use regulative cycle for this
- formulate the research objective
- formulate research questions
5
Q
common mistakes in research questions
A
- RQ’s are not well aligned with the internal objective (they either broaden or restrict the objective)
- RQ’s are related to the external objective (ask how to solve the problem instead of asking a scientific question)
- RQ’s are not researchable (desk questions, or aimed at changing the world)
- key terms are already operationalized
6
Q
tips for identifying knowledge gaps
A
- look at mediators (mechanisms in the effect of x on y)
- look at moderators (effect of z on relationship)
- look at the relationship in a different population (external validity)
- measurement validity: look at dimensions of x
- internal validity: control the confounders
