Deciduous Woodlamd Flashcards
What is abscission?
A part of the nutrient cycle where leaves fall from trees onto the forest floor
What is deciduous?
A type of woodland where trees lose their leaves in Autumn and grow new ones in Spring.
What is the difference between deciduous and coniferous woodland?
Trees in coniferous woodlands do not lose their leaves whereas trees in deciduous woodlands do.
Give an example of a tree in a deciduous woodland.
Oak tree
Give an example of a tree in a coniferous woodland.
Pine tree
What is an adaptation?
Ana adaption is a special feature that a plant/animal has that helps them survive in their habitat. Adaptations develop over many years as the habitat changes.
How is an oak tree adapted to its habitat? Answer in bullet points.
- produce acorns which fall on the ground and get dispersed by animals
- broad leaves enables more sunlight to be absorb for photosynthesis
- large extensive root system anchors the tree and gives access to to nutrients in the soil
- loses leaves in Autumn to conserve energy
Where are most deciduous woodland across the globe?
- North America (Canada, Central Mexico)
- Europe (spreading into Russia)
- Eastern Asia (China, Japan)
- Parts of Australia
What is the climate like in deciduous woodland?
Warm summer, colder winters
What is the level of rainfall in deciduous woodland? High, medium or low?
High levels of rainfall
What are the 4 layers of deciduous woodland?
Ground, scrub, sun-canopy and canopy layer
What plants and animals are found in the ground layer?
Plants: Leaf litter, wood, types of fungi, grass, bracken and flowers
Animals: hedgehogs, rabbits, dormice, insects
What plants and animals are found in the shrub layer?
Plants: young/pollard trees like hazel, holly & ash
Animals: deer, foxes, small mammals
What plants and animals are found in the sub-canopy layer?
Plants: tall trees that have a bit of access to to rain/sunlight from above
Animals: eagles & red squirrels
What plants and animals are found in the canopy layer?
Plants: dense layer of dominant trees e.g oak, beech
Animals: small birds e.g robins/woodpeckers
