deciding on research question Flashcards
What is a hypothesis
Predictive statement about what researcher expects to find
One tailed directional hypothesis
States IV will effect DV and what the effect will be. makes prediction and states direction of prediction - confident
Two tailed directional hypothesis
States IV will affect DV but doesn’t state how, just that a difference will be found. Used in newer investigation or when previous research inconclusive
Null hypothesis
Predicts that there will be no difference between the two conditions. IV has no effect on DV
Independent variable
Being manipulated by researcher - the difference between conditions
Dependent variable
What’s being measured by researcher - the outcome or score
Co-variables
two variables being measure within correlational research
Operationalisation
Defining the key variables in an objective, measurable way
Extraneous variables
Unwanted variables in research that may affect outcomes (DV). Consistent, affect all participants equally
Cofounding variables
Unwanted variables in research that may affect outcomes (DV). Inconsistent and affect only some of the participants
