Current death program
Operational on a worldwide basis during peacetime and may continue to exist in an area of conflict during major military operations
Graves registration program
Operational when authorized by the responsible commander during major military operations (wartime) includes search/recovery/and evacuation
Concurrent return program
Combines current death and graves registration
Return of remains program
Activated by special legislation: provides permanent disposition of remains in temporary cemeteries that could not be evacuated. Can authorize establishment of 1 or more permanent American cemeteries overseas
What is a CACP?
Casualty assistance calls program: coordinator who designates a AD commissioned officer or well qualified senior enlisted member to serve as CACO
How soon should the NOK be notified of service members death?
Within 24 hours
What are the job duties of a CACO?
Disposition of remains, death gratuity, personal effects, settlement of estate, SGLI, application for VA survivor benefits/dependency and indemnity comp/social security, shipment of HHG, travel to grave site, medical care, NEX and commissary privileges, employment/education, government headstone, other requests from PNOK/SNOK
What are the objectives of the decedent affairs program?
Immediate recovery and identification
High standards of and uniformity in services
Minimum elapsed time between death and delivery to PNOK
Prompt notification to PNOK and SNOK

Who directs the disposition of unidentified remains?

Primary expenses
Recovery, preparation, encasement of remains to include recovery, removal, embalming, casket, shipping container, cremation, urn, clothing, delivery of remains on common-carrier terminal
Secondary expenses
Transportation (local) of relatives to cemetery, single grave site, vault, funeral directors services, clergymen’s services, opening and closing grave site, floral tribute, obituary notices
Who can request for an extension?
Naval activity who was responsible for the arrangements, addressed to CO of that activity for coordination with members CO and appropriate PSD

What temperature should remains be stored?
36-40 degrees Fahrenheit or 2.2-4.4 degrees Celsius
How often does the NOK be notified for search operations?
Daily
What is the uniform provided for burial?
Service dress blues
Cap if requested

Insignia, devices, badges, and decorations as authorized
What are the casket procedures for burial at sea?
Naval hospital of geographic area will provide a metal casket
Minimum 20 holes, 2 inches in diameter for rapid entry of sea water (8 on base, 4 each half of lid, 2 each end)
Banded with 5 nylon bands not less than 3/4 inch width, 2 each half of lid 1 length of casket
At what distance can a burial at sea be conducted?
Outside 3 mile limit of continental shelf with depth of 100 fathoms (600 feet)
How much should a casket weigh for rapid submersion? Where should weights be placed to ensure rapid feet first submersion?
300lbs, in the foot end of the casket
What can be used to cover drilled holes in the casket?
Porous materials: cloth, paper, cardboard, tape
