Decedent Affairs Manual
Purpose: to carry out the department of the navy’s decedent affairs program
NAVMEDCOMINST 5360.1
Provides professiona mortuary services, supplies and related services incident to care and disposition of remains of persons eligible for these services
Current death program
Provides for the search, recovery, evacuation (to a temporary cemetery or mortuary) initial identification, disposition of personal effects found with each deceased
Graves Registration Program
Combines the current death program and Graves registration program. Activated during emergencies or major military operations when conditions and capabilities permit
Concurrent return program
Can only be activated upon enactment of special legislation. Provides for permanent disposition of remains of those persons buried in temporary cemeteries who could not be evacuated
Under the concurrent return program
Return of remains program
Provides information on such matters such as:
- Disposition of remains
- Death gratuity and unpaid pay and allowances
- Personal effects of deceased
- Settlement of deceased estate
- SGLI
- application for va benefits
- shipment of household items
- travel of dependents to grave site and residence
Casualty assistancecalls program
Activity designated to receive, reprocess and arrange for transportation of remains originating in an overseas location and to recieve remains from naval activities in the 48 contiguous. United States
