Define Custodial sentencing
A judicial sentence that is decided by the court, where the offender is punished by serving time in prison (incarceration)
What are the 4 aims of Custodial sentences
1) Deterrence
2) Incapacitation
3)Retribution
4)Rehabilitation
Deterrence`
Unpleasant prison experience puts of others from committing crime as punishment is imprisonment
Note: Can use custodial sentencing as a example of real life application for social learning approach in approaches in psych topic. (as you learn indirectly from others experiences in prison)
Incapacitation
Offender is put into prison and taken out of society to protect the public from violent or dangerous people
Retribution
Victim and their family wish for a sense of justice so the offender has to pay for their crimes in prison to atone for their actions.
Rehabilitation
Main objective of prison should be to reform the individual so that when they return to society they are better people. This can be done by education and being given jobs.

Problem of recidivism
Recidivism refers to re-offending. The Ministry of Justice in 2013 stated that 57% of the UK offenders will reoffend within a year of release. In 2007, 14 prisons in the England and Wales recorded reoffending rates of over 70%.

Norwegian prisons have some of the lowest recidivism
rates in the world. Their prisons are much more open than
the UK and greater emphasis is placed upon rehabilitation
