What is cognitive preparation
Analyse own patterns of anger and identify situations that provoke them.
What is skill acquisition
Offenders are introduced to a range of techniques and skills to help them with manage their anger more rationally and effectively.
Techniques may be cognitive:
-positive self talk to encourage calmness
Behavioural:
-assertiveness training in how to communicate more effectively
Physiological;
-methods of relaxation/meditation
What is application practice
offenders are given opportunity to put their skills in action. There is a role play where they re-enact scenarios which provoke anger.
Successful negotiation of the role play would be met with
Positive reinforcement from the therapist
A study which provides support for anger management
Keen et al
What did Keen et al find out
studied young offenders who took part in anger management programme. It had 8 2 hour sessions. They found that offenders reported awareness of their anger management difficulties and increased self control.
