Dealing with a train accident or train evacuation Issue 7 Flashcards
What does signal protection mean?
Placing or keeping signals at danger, and closing routes or keeping routes closed.
What are the components included in the term train accident?
- A derailment
- A collision involving trains or rail vehicles
- A collision with an obstruction
- A collision with a road vehicle
- A collision with a person
- A fire on a train which might put other trains passing the location in danger
- A fire on a train which might mean that passengers are evacuated onto running lines
- An accidental train division which has caused another line to be obstructed
What is the first action a driver must take after a train accident?
Immediately switch on the hazard warning indication where provided.
If a driver cannot switch on the hazard warning indication, what should they display?
A red light forward.
What must a driver inform the signaller about after a train accident?
- Whether the electric traction current needs to be switched off.
- If any other lines are obstructed
- The exact location of your train
What should a driver do if they cannot contact the signaller or the signaller cannot provide signal protection after an accident?
Carry out emergency protection.
After a train accident a clear understanding with Guard must be reached regarding what?
Which lines you will protect.
What must a signaller do when alerted to a train accident?
- Protect each obstructed line or arrange for this to be done
- Take action to prevent trains approaching the accident
- Make an emergency broadcast to trains in the area
- Arrange for the emergency services to be called if needed
What does the driver need to do to provide emergency protection?
- Place a track-circuit operating clip on every line that is obstructed
- Show a hand danger signal to any approaching train
- Protect with detonators
How far away must detonators be placed on a double-track line?
20 metres (approximately 20 yards) apart on the other obstructed line 2 kilometres (1¼ miles) from the obstruction.
When carrying out emergency protection what should a driver do if a train approaches before reaching the full protection distance?
Place three detonators immediately, show a hand danger signal or red flag to the approaching train.
If a train is on fire, what is the first priority for the driver and guard?
Try to put out any fire on the train.
What must be done if a fire cannot be extinguished quickly on a train?
Stop the train immediately.
Where possible do not stop the train;
* in a tunnel
* on a viaduct
* any other unsuitable place
What action should be taken if there is a risk of fire spreading?
Separate the burning vehicles from the rest of the train.
What must the driver do if the train cannot proceed due to a fire?
Tell the signaller and carry out any necessary protection.
If the train can proceed you must tell the signaller as soon as possible.
What should a driver do if the two portions of a divided train can be recoupled?
Get the personal authority of the signaller for the movement.
When the two portions have been recoupled you must tell the signaller the train is complete, stopping specially if necessary.
If ERTMS is in operation you must get the signallers authority to proceed.
What must be displayed in the divided rear portion of a train being left behind?
- A red light in the rear
- A white light in the front
You must then tell the signaller that the rear portion is to be left in the section and the exact location of the rear portion.
If you have not been able to tell the signaller, you must not go beyond the next stop signal or block marker until you have told the signaller.
You must not leave a single-line section until you have told the signaller.
What must the signaller do when an assisting train is ready to enter the section for a divided train?
- Tell the driver the exact location of the divided portion
- Inform the driver of the displayed light color on the divided portion
- If necessary, instruct the driver to pass at danger the signal protecting the obstructed line or to pass an end of authority (EoA) without a movement authority (MA).
You must: - proceed at caution
- not exceed a speed of 25 mph (40 km/h).
What is a precondition for evacuating a train?
Carry out an evacuation only if it is absolutely necessary.
What must the driver do during a controlled evacuation?
- Tell the signaller that the train is to be evacuated and ask for signal protection on all affected lines.
- If necessary, you must also ask for the electric traction current to be switched off.
- When the signaller tells you all signal protection has been completed, you must tell the guard.
What should a driver do if an uncontrolled evacuation is taking place?
- Tell the signaller and ask for immediate signal protection on all lines that may be affected.
- If necessary, you must also ask for the electric traction current to be switched off.
- If you cannot contact the signaller, or the signaller cannot provide signal protection, you must carry out emergency protection.
What actions must a signaller take when informed about a train evacuation?
- Block all lines that may be affected
- Inform the driver when protection is provided
After a train accident when the signaller tells you that signal protection has been provided, you must place a track-circuit operating clip on:
- Every other line that is obstructed, and
- The line on which your train is standing if the whole train has been derailed.
When carrying out emergency protection what should a driver on reaching a telephone or signal box before reaching the full protection distance?
Place 3 detonators on the line 20m apart & speak with the signaller. If the signaller confirms signal protection is being provided you do not need to continue the full 2km/1.25m protection distance.
When carrying out emergency protection what should a driver do on reaching a diverging junction before reaching the full protection distance?
Place 3 detonators on the line 20m apart before reaching the junction then decide the order in which you protect each line.
When carrying out emergency protection during emergency special working or temporary block working is in operation what should a driver do?
Protect any other lines then protect the line on which your train is standing.
What must a driver do after an accidental train division?
- Secure both portions and account for all vehicles
- Tell the guard about the situation
- Check to couplings where the train has divided to see if they have damaged any track or line side equipment (if so tell the signaller) and check for any damage which would prevent recoupling.
What must be displayed in the divided front portion of a train?
You must put a tail lamp on the rear of the front portion if it is on a track circuit block or ERTMS line. If you are not on a track circuit block or ERTMS line, you must only do this when the front portion reaches:
* the next signal box, or
* a track circuit block or ERTMS line.
Regarding passengers what should you do during an uncontrolled evacuation?
*Try and prevent passengers making an uncontrolled evacuation.
*Warn passengers about any risks.
