DC electrified lines Flashcards

1
Q

What is an emergency switch-off?

A

An emergency switch-off is carried out by the electrical control operator (ECO) when it is essential to switch off the electrical supply immediately due to danger from live conductor rail equipment (CRE)

The ECO will switch off the electrical supply to the affected section and the abutting sections on either side.

20
Q

What must you do before allowing a train to proceed after an emergency switch-off?

A
  • Ensure the train is not fitted with collector shoes
  • Get assurance from the driver that collector shoes are raised.
21
Q

What is the responsibility of the person in charge of electrical emergency (PICEE)?

A

Manage the emergency switch-off and communicate with the ECO.

22
Q

What must be done after the emergency is over regarding the CRE?

A

Warn everyone that electricity is about to be switched on and ensure everyone is clear of the CRE.

23
Q

Fill in the blank: The ECO will decide who is the ________ during an emergency switch-off.

A

person in charge of electrical emergency (PICEE)

24
Q

What must you do if you hand over the responsibility of the emergency switch-off?

A

Inform the ECO immediately with the name, job title, and employer of the person taking over

ECO refers to the Emergency Control Officer.

25
Q

What must you do if you take over the responsibility of the emergency switch-off?

A

Confirm the arrangements with the ECO immediately

26
Q

What actions must be taken once the emergency is over and the affected section can be re-energised?

A
  • Warn everyone involved
  • Ensure everyone is clear of the CRE
  • Remove any short-circuiting bars or materials used during the emergency switch-off
  • Inform the ECO that the emergency is over
27
Q

What is required for a planned or temporary isolation?

A

Follow Network Rail company instructions

28
Q

Who is responsible for rescuing a person from the CRE?

A

All concerned

29
Q

What must be ensured before rescuing someone in contact with the CRE?

A

The CRE is switched off

30
Q

What conditions must be met to attempt a rescue if the CRE cannot be switched off?

A
  • The person is alive
  • You can cover your hands with something dry and non-conductive
  • You can stand on dry non-conducting material
  • You are not using metal objects
31
Q

What does isolation of the traction current not imply?

A

Train running has been stopped

32
Q

What must not happen until a conductor rail permit (CRP) is received?

A

Work that requires an isolation

33
Q

What must you do with the CRP after your group has finished working?

A

Return it immediately to the person who issued it

34
Q

What must you do if you lose your CRP?

A

Immediately tell the AP

35
Q

What is required for a local isolation?

A

A local isolation instruction must be issued

36
Q

Who must arrange for points to be placed and kept in position to prevent trains from entering an isolated area?

A

The person in charge of a siding possession (PICOS)

37
Q

What must be done to protect points against movement?

A
  • Use reminder appliances
  • Secure them if they are hand points
38
Q

Who may operate a track isolating switch or hook switch?

A

Only if competent and authorized by the ECO

39
Q

What must you do immediately after operating any switches?

A

Inform the ECO

40
Q

What must you do when restoring a normally open hook switch?

A

Proceed at caution over the location of the short circuit

45
Q

What must be confirmed before allowing an electric train to approach an isolated section?

A

The approach is protected by a possession limit board (PLB) and three detonators

46
Q

What must the driver ensure before moving a train that has collector shoes?
