DCD Flashcards
1
Q
DCD
A
- developmental coordination disorder
- motor coordination disorder markedly below expected levels for child’s age and intelligence
- significantly interferes with academic achievement/ADLs
2
Q
DCD Prevalence
A
- 5% of school aged children
- higher in preterm populations
3
Q
Diagnosis
A
- motor impairment and/or motor skill delay significantly impacting child’s ability to perform age appropriate activities
- adequate opportunities for experience/practice provided
- no other explanation
4
Q
Clinical manifestations
A
- delays in motor milestones
- dropping things
- clumsiness
- poor performance in sports
- poor handwriting
5
Q
Cause
A
- no specific pathologic process or single neuroanatomic site
- could be: cerebellar, impaired feed forward model, mirror neurons
6
Q
Associated Disorders
A
- intellectual disability
- ADHD
- Learning Disability
- Speech/Articulation Difficulties
7
Q
Prognosis
A
- don’t “grow out of” DCD
- engage in less vigorous play, spend more time alone and less time in team play
- risk for dev: neg physical, social, emotional, behavioral and mental health consequences
8
Q
Impairments
A
- sensory/perceptual
- motor deficits
- motor control deficits
- motor learning deficits
- physical (fatigue, weakness)
- social/emotional/behavioral
9
Q
Sensory/perceptual Impairments
A
- visual feedback managed differently and processed more slowly
- deficiencies in kinesthetic processing
- poor proprioceptive function
- rely on visual feedback
10
Q
Motor Deficits
A
- move akwardly, slowly, rigid/jerky
- bump into people/objects
- poor balance
- trip and fall
11
Q
Motor Control Deficits
A
- inappropriate/ineffective muscular activation and sequencing
- less effective method of muscular organization
12
Q
Motor Learning Deficits
A
- limited movement repertoir
- lack adaptability and flexibility in movements
- variability and inconsistency in motor performance
- unable to correct movement patterns
13
Q
Physical Impairments
A
- fatigue, lack energy
- decreased strength
14
Q
Social/Emotional/Behavioral Impairments
A
- quiet
- withdrawn
- avoidance
- acting out
- low frustration tolerance
- decreased motivation
- poor self-esteem
15
Q
Activity Limitations
A
- slow, clumsy gait
- difficulty with self-care
- difficulty with classroom fine motor skills (handwriting)
- delayed and poor quality gross motor skills
- delayed oral-motor skills
