DC BIO FINAL- Unit 1: Ecology Flashcards
Ecosystem
Comprises all biotic and abiotic components in a particular area
Biotic and Abiotic Fators
B: Living things (Plants, animals, fungi)
A: Nonliving things (Air, water, soil, climate)
Biome
Large-scale communities of organisms mostly defined on land by the dominant plant types that exist in geographic regions with similar climate conditions
Food chain
Linear sequence of organisms which nutrients and energy pass as one organism eats another
Trophic Level
Organism position in food web or chain
Producers
Base or foundation of the food chain (Plants & phytoplankton)
Primary Consumers
Herbivores- organisms that consume the producers
Secondary Consumers
Carnivores that eat the primary consumers
Tertiary Consumers
Carnivores that eat other carnivores.
Apex consumers: Top of food chain
Energy Pyramids
Graphical representation of different trophic levels in an ecosystem based on energy content
10% Rule
Only 10% of energy from one trophic level makes it to the next trophic level. Due to not every org being eaten and energy used by org at that level
Food Web
The concept that accounts for multiple trophic interactions between each species and many species it may feed on or that feed on it
Grazing vs. Detrital Food Webs
Grazing: Has plants or photosynthetic organisms at the base
Detrital: Base of organisms that feed on decaying organic matter including decomposers
Autotrophs
Harness light or chemical energy
Photoautotrophs
Use sunlight as energy source to photosynthesize includes bacteria, algae, and plants
