Daycare Flashcards

Care which is given when a child’s parent goes to work, usually a nursery or childminder.
Describe research that has investigated daycare and aggression.
Haskins: 59 children with varying amounts and types of daycare were followed for their first 2 OR 3 years of public schooling. School teachers rated aggressiveness of different types and in different situations. Children who attended a cognitively oriented nursery were more aggressive.

DeLilla: 52 pairs of same sex 5 year old children played in a nursery like setting for 20 minutes. They were measured on pro social behaviour (politeness, sharing, smiling) and aggression (hitting, shouting, teasing). Parents also completed questionnaire. Children with little or no day were more pro social. Daycare has a negative effect on social behaviour but not aggression.
