Attachment Theories Flashcards
Describe Bowlbys theory.
Evolutionary theory, nature, pre programmed biological innate drive, social releases ensure short term survival, attachment creates internal working model, helps build adult relationships for long term survival. Does matter if one forms or not.
Describe the learning theory.
Behaviourist, nurture, classical and operant conditioning, UCS, UCR, NS, CS, CR, baby being fed feels pleasure, pleasure goes to mum and she feeding the baby. Learnt responses, crys once and gets food so will cry again to be fed. Doesn’t matter if attachment forms or not.
Evaluate the learning theory.
:) little Albert study.
:( not palatable, no love.
:( empirical evidence, Harlow.
Evaluate Bowlbys theory.
:) empirical evidence, Harlow.
:( deterministic theory.
:( pessimistic theory.
Describe Harlows study.
8 newborn rheus monkeys taken from birth placed in cage with both a cloth mother and a wire mother. 4 were fed by one and the other 4 the other. He found that when scared of seeking comfort the monkeys all went to the cloth mother despite who fed it. When released back with other monkey inappropriate and delinquent behaviour.
Evaluate Harlows Study.
:) high internal.
:( low population.
:( low ecological.
:( unethical.
Describe the strange situation.
Observational case study, filmed and one sided glass, 7 episodes 3 mins long each, mother and baby alone, stranger enters, mother leaves, stranger leaves and mother returns, mother leaves, stranger returns, stranger leaves and mother returns. 4 things were measure willingness to explore, separation anxiety, stranger anxiety and reunion behaviour. On a scale of 1-7.
Evaluate the strange situation.
:) high internal.
:) high ecological.
:( unethical.
