Purpose - DAYC
Norm-referenced measure of early childhood development for children
Identify children who are significantly below their peers in cognition, communication, social-emotional, physical, or adaptive behavior abilities
Monitor children’s progress in special intervention programs.
Research studying abilities in young children.
Determine developmental delays across multiple domains
Scoring - DAYC
Observation of children in their school or home environment, structured interview with parents or other caregivers, and/or direct assessment
Can be performed as an interview with parents if child is unable or unwilling to participate
Domains - DAYC
Cognition, communication, social-emotional, physical development, and adaptive behavior
Receptive language and expressive language
Gross motor and fine motor
Activity limitation
Population - DAYC
Birth - 5 y/o 11 mos?? -very specific
Advantages - DAYC
No excessive space or materials
Quick to administer for selective domains (15-20 minutes)
Domains can be tested in isolation to save time / obtain pertinent information
Easily scored with standardization tables
Completed over consecutive days or sessions
Monitor progress in special intervention programs
Variety of experienced professionals can administer the test
Disadvantages - DAYC
Floor and ceiling effects
Inaccurate information may be given in an interview (i.e. the parents of a child that is in daycare all day, so the parents may not observe all behaviors)
Takes 1 hour
Subjective information may skew results
May include cultural bias (i.e. “uses ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ appropriately)
