Temporary care provided by someone other than primary caregiver
What can day care consist of?
Other family members looking after the child
Sending child to a childminder, nanny or day nursery
Who enforces rules and regulations for how day care institutions should be run, facilities, staff levels and training?
Ofsted
Why do children benefit from day care?
Socialise more -> easier to make friends at school
Understand social rules -> learning to share toys and interact with one another
Enhance cognitive development -> number games
What are the drawbacks about sending children to day care?
May make them aggressive
Affect attachment styles -> more time in day care = insecure attachments
May not be affected by absence of mother = insecure avoidant
What does good quality day care consist of?
Low adult to child ratio (1:3)
Stable attachment figure e.g. key worker
Small-sized group
Mixed age groups e.g. families
Low staff turnover
Well-trained staff (at least level 2)
Structured day
Why do Belsky and Rovine say day care is bad?
Children spending more than 20 hours in day care developed insecure attachments
Why does Kagan suggest day care does not affect the development of a child?
Temperament of a child affects the attachment
Why does the EPPE project say day care is good?
Children who attended day care before the age of 3 had better intellectual development
Why does Li say day care is good?
Children in high quality day care improved their academic, memory and language abilities
Why does Shea say day care is good?
Children become more sociable
Amount of aggressive behaviour towards one another decrease
Why does the NICHD say that day care is not good?
Leads to behavioural problems, especially low quality day care
