What did the American founders think about the importance of civic virtues?

A

they wanted a govt that promoted liberty and welfare but feared that without civi virtue the republic would fail, fear that a tyranny could arise through democracy. strong believers in civic virtue but resisted institutionalizing rep virtues in the new republic, they were nervous about democratic rule, would people choose policies consistent with rep virtues? or choose tyranny for the majority

it put limits on the king, the king was then subject to the law rather than the creator of the law

What are the core principles of Rule of Law, and how are they applied in the real world?

A

Generality: laws must be general and apply to all, not just groups(can’t write laws that affect only some people)
Prospectivity: laws should apply to things of the future, not things of the past (can’t change law and then tell someone they must be punished)
Publicity: the law should be publicly known(it has to be well known)
Due Process: everyone who participate sin the legal process is entitled to the same legal rights (no one will not face it w/out certain processes and rights)
Consent: the people themselves should consent to the laws that govern them by electing the lawmakers(give consent)
