conceptions of liberty

A
ancient liberty(greeks): freedom to participate in civic life with the goal of creating a virtuous citizenry
civil liberty (puritans): men are free to do only that which is good, just, and honest
natural liberty(negative liberty): humans have rights and govt should protect and not interfere with
positive liberty: freedom requires the capacity to act in ways that promote human welfare, ie adequate food and shelter
