Day 4: South African Apartheid Flashcards
What was apartheid?
Apartheid was a set of 150 laws that discriminated dark skinned south Africans and gave white south Africans an unfair advantage.
What is segregation?
Segregation is the act of segregating or separating different groups of people based on religion, physical, or mental attributes.
Who was Nelson Mandela?
Nelson Mandela was one of the leaders in the ANC, and was a very famous prisoner. She was so famous, in fact, that she was elected the first Black South African president. Nelson Mandela was sent to a life sentence in jail once, but was freed after 27 years as F.W de Klerk let him out.
Who was F.W de Klerk?
F.W de Klerk was elected president of South Africa in 1989. He would work with Nelson Mandela to bring down the apartheid system. He let Nelson Mandela out of jail in 1990, which marked 27 years of Nelson Mandela in jail. Eventually, He and Nelson would go against each other in the first not discriminatory election, in which Nelson Mandela won. He and Nelson Mandela would both get Nobel Peace Prizes in 1993.
