Signal Irregularities and Passing signals at Danger

What could be some reasons for passing a signal at danger?

A

-Defective or disconnected signal
-Signal failure
-Movement to an occupied section to gain access to a station
-Movement to start from ahead of signal and can’t be cleared
-Electric train towards an isolated track section
-Clearing point (overlap) of next box is occupied
-Gain access to station to protect staff
-Examining the line
-First train after divided train has been moved
-Assist or evacuate a failed train, removing a portion of a divided train
-As required when single line working is operation
-On a single or bi-directional line when working by pilot is in operation

When can the signaller only authorise the driver to pass two consecutive stop signals at danger?

A

-Not on a single line
-Both signals have to be affected by the same fault and can’t display a proceed or if the second isn’t displaying anything
-No distant signal between
-Second stop signal is not fitted with TPWS
-Line has been examined and is known to be clear up to and including the overlap of the signal advance of the second signal

What must the signaller tell the driver when authorised to pass 2 consecutive stop signals at danger?

A

-Signal IDs of each signal
-Max speed of 50mph
-Proceed at caution at any location necessary
-Disregard any ground position shunt signals unless instructed
-Obey the aspect displayed on all subsequent signals
-Driver to repeat back all instructions to ensure a clear understanding has been achieved

-Complete RT3185
-Hand in RT3185 before booking off
