Day 2: Analogical Arguments Flashcards
What does the table of an analogical argument look like
[A B] [C]
[Y Y Y]
Z Z [Z?]
Grounds
Items that poses all the properties
All the PROPERTIES possessed by the ITEMS on the table
[X X X, Y Y Y]
Basis
ITEM that shares the BASIS with the GROUND but isn’t known to share the problematic extension
Objective extension
The conclusion. Z?
Problematic extension
What does the STRUCTURE of an analogical argument look like
Premise 1: A,B have properties X,Y,Z
Premise 2: C has properties X, Y
Therefore: C has property “Z” as well
Criterion of Interest 1
Larger the basis, stronger the analogy
Criterion of Interest 2
Basis must be relevant to the conclusion
Criterion of Interest 3
Larger the ground, stronger the analogy
Criterion of Interest 4
Relevant differences “tend” to weaken analogy
Criterion of Interest 5
Contrary to Criterion 4, if 1-3 are “optimally large” relevant differences can strengthen analogy
