Day 1: Inductions Flashcards
What are inductions?
Argument intended to reach a conclusion that is probably, not conclusively, true.
How do inductions relate the past and the future?
The premise (past) report on experience. The conclusion is that the future will resemble the past.
Why can’t you justify an induction?
You can’t induct on an induction, and you can’t make an absolute deduction on an induction.
What is the Principle of the Universality of Nature
An attempt to justify an induction. It says that the universe does not change of its nature, such as the future always resembles the past.
How does the Principle of the Universality of Nature fails at justifying inductions.
PUN fails because it itself is an induction.
What is the conclusion of David Hume’s attempt at justifying inductions?
Inductions are only justified as long as they are reliable. Without this, we’d all go insane.
