Ballast
A layer of crushed stone to form the track bed on which the railway sleepers and track are laid.
Bi- Directional
Allowing for normal travel from either direction according to the infrastructure and system of safe working in use.
Blind side
This is the side of the train away from the platform, or the opposite side from which the Locomotive Operator will be located. “Blindside” or “Off side” applies to the side from which hand signals are not usually given.
Block of Line
A planned shutdown of a section of railway lines for larger scale maintenance work.
Branch line
A secondary line diverging from a more significant main line.
Catenary Line
Wire attached to the contact wire at regular intervals by vertical wires known as “droppers” or “drop wires” and is supported by Traction masts at regular intervals.
Bulletin
A controlled instruction printed, typed, or email, issued by those authorised in the Rail Operating Rules.
EMU
Electrical Motor Unit. A 2 or 3 passenger car set that is electrically powered
TMS
Train Maintenence Screen is located inside the driver’s cab. It has the door function, brake function and other electric function status.
External Door Status light
The external lights that signal if the doors are closed properly or not.
S.P.A.D
Signals Passed At Danger
Ramp Isolation Switch
The switch used to isolate the ramp
Mechanical Door Isolation switch
Switch used to Isolate the door.
Panel Activate Switch
The panel in which you can activate the doors and ROW
