Database Flashcards
How do you search using different databases?
Use the Internet & a keyboard? What kind of objective is this?
Rank the best to worst databases:
1) Pub Med
1) Clinical Queries
2) Cochrane Library
3) ADA’s EBD site
4) TRIP Data Base
5) CEBD
How does PubMed work?
use PICO for key words during search indexed with MeSH terms (National
Library of Medicine Subject Headings) and availability of newer items not indexed for
searching
→PubMed offers articles not yet published to MEDLINE (database containing
health subjects)
What does Clinical Queries work?
filters out all research not related to clinically related questions;
sorts into clinical study categories, reviews & medical genetics; allows quick searches
based on etiology, diagnosis, therapy, & prognosis; clinical prediction guidelines
How does Cochrane Library work?
systemic reviews & Cochrane reviews; they have their own
libraries they review
Describe ADA’s EBD site:
keeps up with hot topics & great for use post-graduation
Describe TRIP Data Base:
pulls up reviews easily
Describe CEBD:
won’t need as much & is harder to use
What are MeSH TERMS?
National Library of Medicine Medical Subject Headings
Specific terms/similar to thesaurus/filters articles/found in Medline & PubMed (i.e.
braces are not the same as orthodontic brackets)
What do MeSH TERMS do?
MeSH = Medical Subject Headings
Mesh terms set limits and are used to find the best evidence:
- Language
- Age
- Time period/Date
- Gender or sex
- Publication types: systemic reviews, meta, RCT, practice guidelines, reviews
What are the Clinical Study Categories?
- Etiology
- Diagnosis
- Therapy
- Prognosis
- Clinical
- Predication guides
Why is PubMed a good website to use when searching for articles?
PubMed is indexed with MeSH terms and new items not indexed for searching
Medline is indexed with only MeSH terms for search
MeSH is a national library of medicines controlled vocabulary thesaurus
Terms naming descriptors in hierarchical structure that permits searching at
various level → specificity
What are Boolean operators?
connection word or symbol that allows a computer user to include
or exclude items in a test search ~
OR, AND, NOT
These must be capitalized in PubMed
DON’T limit to “full text”
What does “OR” do?
OR = broadens search
must be capitalized in PubMed
DON’T limit to “full text”
What does “AND” do?
AND = narrows search
must be capitalized in PubMed
DON’T limit to “full text”
