Data: Levels Of Measurement Flashcards
What are the 4 levels of measurement
- nominal
- ordinal
- interval
- ratio
Describe nominal measurement
- named categories
- data are in separate categories
- within each category, make a count of how many people or items are in that category
- e.g. amount of dogs, or cats owned in the school
Describe ordinal measurement
- ordered categories
- data can be ordered from smallest to largest
- the intervals between the data are not fixed
- e.g. a race, 1st, 2nd, etc… (the distance between 1st and 2nd and 3rd may all vary)
Describe interval measurement
- fixed equal intervals between each value, that don’t change
- can be ordered
- can go below 0
- e.g. temp
- can’t be for opinion or attitudes (these would be ordinal)
Describe ratio measurement
- fixed equal intervals between each value that don’t change
- can be ordered
- there is an absolute 0
What level of measurement is being used: “Participants are set a puzzle they can or can’t solve. Their temperature is taken as a measure of stress due to puzzle they get”
Interval
What level of measurement is being used: “Heart rate was measured while participants completed a presentation to a group of 100 people or group of 5 people”
Ratio
What level of measurement is being used: “Participants are asked to rate a series of photographs on their level of attractiveness”
Ordinal
What level of measurement is being used: “Watching shopping behaviour and tallying the type of items shoppers purchase”
Nominal
