Data Flashcards
What is primary data?
Original data that you have collected yourself, through direct contact with the participants. Data is suitable for the aim of your study.
A strength of primary data:
+ More relevant to researcher aims as they collect info directly for their experiment and do not have to go through other irrelevant data that secondary data may present
A weakness of primary data:
- Takes time to collect whereas secondary data can be collected within a short time
What is secondary data?
Data obtained from another source, without direct contact with participants. For example, other studies/journals. May not always be tailored to your study.
A strength of secondary data:
+ Data can be collected within a short time whereas primary data takes time to collect
A weakness of secondary data:
- Less relevant to researcher aims as there may be lots of irrelevant data in secondary data that does not meet researcher aims.
What is a meta-analysis?
- The process of drawing broader conclusions by combining the findings of multiple studies through statistical analysis
- Overall conclusion based on the findings of each individual study from the sample
- Helps improve external validity
Two strengths of meta-analysis:
+ Helps rule out the impact of anomalous conclusions - one off studies that contradict the general outlook of the field
+ Gives you a general understanding of what all the studies from the field are saying, helps inform us of the consensus
A weakness of meta-analysis:
- Still secondary data- method of the studies from the sample could be faulty - this could affect conclusions drawn. For example, use of strange situation in Van Ijzendoorn
What is qualititive data?
Non-numerical data that expresses the ‘quality’ of things - descriptions, words, meanings, pictures and texts
A strength of qualititive data:
+ Has lots of depth and detail
A weakness of qualititive data:
- Difficult to analyse
What is quantitive data?
Data that is numerical, for example, data that represents how much, duration or how many
Strength of quantitive data:
+ Easy to analyse and compare
Weakness of quantitive data:
- Lacks depth and detail
