Dan’s Extra Questions Flashcards

1
Q

What is the ICAO normal lapse rate? (Define and state ‘standard’ value)

A

Rate of Temperature decrease in static air as altitude increases. It is defined as 1.98°C/1000ft assuming ICAO standard atmosphere conditions. (15° and 1013.25 hPa at sea level).

16
Q

What is Pressure Altitude?

A

Pressure altitude is the altitude indicated at a given location when an altimeter is set to ICAO standard pressure of 1013.25. In low pressure met conditions, it will be higher than the actual altitude of the location, and in high pressure met conditions, it will read lower than the actual altitude.

17
Q

How does air density change according to temperature?

A

Air density is decreased by ~1% when temperature increases by 3ºC. The same is true when air pressure lowers by 10hPa.

18
Q

How does pressure change according to altitude?

A

Decrease by ~1 hPa per 30’ increase in elevation under ICAO Standard conditions (1013.25 hPa 15ºC @ MSL)
