Why do cows need an area to lie-down?
To rest and ruminate
What are the advantages of straw bedding?
Comfort, choice of lying position, decreased lameness
What are the disadvantages of straw bedding?
More bedding required, increased mastitis
How is bacteria controlled in straw bedding?
Compost effect kills, daily top up needed
How should water/food be positioned with straw bedding?
Separate with concrete/matting to stop faeces and straw
What is the minimum lying space per cow?
7.5m squared

1.25 m squared per 1000l of milk
How much extra space should be given as a loafing area?

What are the advantages of cubicles?
Higher cleanliness, more efficient, individual lying space, lower mastitis
