Dacryoadenitis Flashcards
Aetiology:
Inflammation of the lacrimal gland
May be caused by viral or bacterial infection or systemic inflammatory conditions as sarcoidosis, mumps, glandular fever.
Rarely malignancy of the lacrimal gland
Usually self-limiting
Predisposing factors:
Uncommon
M = F
No age predilection
Differential diagnosis:
Preseptal cellulitis
Orbital cellulitis
Signs:
Swelling around lacrimal gland (superior temporal)
Red skin on the lid
Serous or mucopurulent discharge
Ptosis of the lid due to swollen tissue
Symptoms:
Tender / painful at site of the swelling (upper temporal lid)
Excessive tearing + discharge
Acute onset or chronic depending on cause
Management by CLO:
Cease CL wear
Acute onset for adults - monitor for self resolution
Chronic case to be referred to
Referral by emergency - differential diagnosis could be cellulitis
Same day referral for children
