D3 - limbs fascia & veins & arteries Flashcards
what are some deep fascial compartments in upper limb?
- pectoral fascia
- deltoid fascia
- brachial fascia
- antebrachial fascia
what are some deep compartments of lower limb fascia?
- fascia lata (iliotibial band)
- crural fascia
what is arterial supply to upper limb?
subclavian (pass under clavicle) →axillary →brachial →gives off deep brachial arteries →bifurcates to radial artery & ulnar artery →connect with deep & superficial palmar arteries to make palmar arch and metacarpal & digital arteries
what is arterial supply to lower limb?
external iliac (under inguinal ligament) →femoral artery →gives rise to deep (profunda femoris) femoral artery (supplies thigh through perforator branches) →popliteal artery →branches to anterior & posterior tibial arteries →dorsalis pedis (continuation of anterior tibial), medial & lateral plantar arteries (posterior tibial) and arcuate & deep plantar arch arteries →also metatarsal & digital arteries
what is difference between superficial & deep veins?
superficial = obvs more superficial but also smaller & thinner, variable patterns & hard to predict
deep = larger & thicker, run in predictable pattern
what is superficial venous system in upper limb?
CEPHALIC VEIN
= arise from dorsal venous network, travels up lateral aspect through deltopectoral groove then pierces fascia to go axillary then subclavian vein
BASILIC VEIN
= also arises from dorsal venous network but travels medial aspect of limb and at mid-arm level pierces fascia and drains to deep brachial vein
*both meet at cubital fossa = medial cubital vein (common for venesection)
what is lower limb superficial venous system?
GREAT SAPHENOUS
= arises dorsal venous arch on foot, travels medial limb up and drains into femoral vein in femoral triangle
SMALL SAPHENOUS
= arises from dorsal venous arch along lateral posterior midline of leg and drains into popliteal vein (posterior to knee)
what is deep venous system in upper limb?
superficial & deep palmar arches→radial & ulnar →brachial & axillary →subclavian →joins with internal jugular →brachiocephalic vein
what is deep venous system in lower limb?
plantar arch →anterior & posterior tibial & fibular →popliteal →femoral vein →tributary from deep femoral →external iliac →common iliac →drain into inferior vena cava
what makes blood in veins move?
- valves
- venae comitantes (veins accompanied by arteries) →the pumping in arteries also helps move venous blood
what is lymphatic drainage in upper limb?
= follow veins so either follow cephalic or basilic
cephalic = drain straight to apical axillary nodes
basilic = drain to cubital nodes then lateral axillary nodes
→both then drain to subclavian
what is lymphatic drainage in lower limb?
following great saphenous→pass to superficial inguinal nodes then deep inguinal node → external iliac
following small →popliteal nodes →inguinal nodes →external iliac
