Ethics
The way to conduct socially responsible research with a focus on the subjects, relationships and community
Ethnicity
Refers to a social group, categorised by a distinct way of life with set customary values
Ethnic Hybridity
Concept informed by Stuart Hall describing the experience of people who have multiple ethnic identities.
Immigration
The movement of people from one country to another
Multiculturalism (1978-now)
A process of interaction between different cultures. In Australian policy, the expectation that all members of society have the right to equal access to services and expression of their cultural identity
“Other”
The labelling of a group of people who are seen as ‘outsiders’ by the dominant culture, considered to be outside the centre of societal values and beliefs.
Race
A socially-constructed category of people who share biologically transmitted traits that members of society consider important.
Assimilation (1937-1973)
An Australian Government Policy whereby Indigenous people and immigrants where require to adapt to, and be absorbed by the dominant culture
Integration (1965-1973)
A short-lived policy based on the premise that Australian Indigenous people had their own culture that needed to be ‘westernised’.
