Assimilation Policy (1950s-60s)
A former Australian Indigenous policy which said Indigenous people “not of full blood” should be absorbed into the wider population
Awareness

Cultural Relativism
The practice of judging a culture by its own standards
Cultural Suppression
The domination of one culture over another by a deliberate policy or economic or technological superiority
Culture
The entire way of life of a group within society, comprising of material and non-material elements
Ethnocentrism
The practice of judging another culture by the standards of one’s own culture
Institution (social)
Groups, beliefs or patterns of behaviour within society that are involved in the socialisation of individuals and groups
Integration Policy
Short-lived policy implemented in 1965 that attempted to “Westernise” traditional AI culture
Material Culture
All the tangible objects, creations and spaces of a group or society.
Noble Savage
Refers to an idealised concept of the uncivilized man who symbolises the innate goodness of one not exposed to the corrupting influences of civilization
Non-material culture
The non-physical creations and ideas of a society which are transmitted across generations
Perception
How one views or feels about a representation
Protection and Segregation Policy (1800s – 1950)
Collection of policies which separated indigenous people from others based on the belief that they were part of a dying race
Reconciliation
Recognising injustice and making change in a society to redress human rights violations and to restore harmony and justice
Representation
Refers to the creation in any medium of aspects of social reality such as people, objects, events, cultural identity and other tangible concepts.
