Cytokines Flashcards
IL-1
Pyrogen (causes fever) and acute inflammation
Activates endothelium’s expression of adhesion molecules
Induces chemokine secretion (LEU recruitment)
IL-2
Stimulates growth of many types of T cells
Helper, Cytotoxic, Regulatory
IL-3
Supports growth and differentiation of bone marrow stem cells (~GM-CSF)
IL-4
Changes Helper T to TH2.
Promotes B cell growth
Class switching to IgE and IgG
IL-5
Promotes differentiation of B cells
Class switching to IgA
Stimulates growth/differentiation of EOS
IL-6
Endogenous pyrogen (fever)
Stimulates production of acute-phase proteins
Also mediates cachexia
IL-8
NEU chemotactic factor
IL-10
Inhibits activated T cells and TH1 (modulates inflammatory responses)
IL-12
Changes Helper T to TH1
Activates NK cells
IFN y
Antiviral/antitumor
Activates Macrophages and TH1
Suppresses TH2
Also mediates cachexia
TNF-a
Causes LEU recruitment and vascular leak
Activates endothelium
Mediates Septic Shock
Main mediator of cachexia
TGF-B
Inhibits activated T cells and TH1 (modulates inflammatory responses)
IFN-alpha, IFN-beta
Inhibits viral protein synthesis
