CYLINDERS Flashcards
define a cylinder
any vessel containing a gas or liquid under pressure
list 4 types of cylinder construction
welded, drawn steel, aluminium, composite
at what temp. do steel and aluminium cylinders lose their tensile strength?
steel - 300, aluminium 200-250
what is the initial hazard zone for a steel cylinder that has been substantially heated or subjected to direct flame impingement?
200 m
what can happen to a composite cylinder when involved in a direct flame impingement?
become porous - evident by a substantial increase in the size of the fire as it will be fed by its contents
what is the initial action if a cylinder is discovered in a fire, regardless of contents?
extinguish fire affecting cylinder and apply a cooling spray directly onto any affected cylinders from behind cover
what are the actions where a composite cylinder is involved and has failed?
contents should be allowed to burn off, before extinguishing the fire. Extinguishing prior to this will allow a potential build up of unburnt gasses
what 4 things need to be established to consider cylinders are not in immediate danger of failing and therefore not necessary to implement a 200m hazard zone?
1, fire has been extinguished. 2, the cylinders are definitely not acetylene. 3, all the cylinders present have been located. 4, the cylinders involved are receiving direct cooling
what does the CAP consist of?
stop application of cooling water after one hour. A) monitor the cylinder with a tic and record temp. B) watch for any violent steaming or rapid drying of cylinder surface C)leave cooling water off for 15 min. Apply a momentary spray of water then shut off. this must be done 4 times, which should take 1 hour
how can acetylene cylinders be recognised?
marron paint, only compressed gas cylinder, does not have coloured shoulders, paper label or ident tape
BA is to be worn within what dist. of a cylinder?
25m
do composite cylinders contain acetylene?
no
how are composite cylinders constituted?
1) gas barrier layer - chemical resistant thermoplastic. 2) Composite layer - major load carrying layer, reinforced fibreglass 3) outer protective layer - impact protection, designed to look attractive, and easy to carry and stack
who has specific training in cylinders and hazard zone maintenance and should be consulted during the incident?
HMEPO
