CVS DR2 - Vasculature of Limbs & lymphatic drainage Flashcards
What artery supplies each upper limb?
Subclavian artery
What is the difference between the right subclavian artery & the left subclavian artery?
Left subclavian arises from aortic arch
Right subclavian artery arises from the bracheocephalic artery, which arises from the aortic arch
What artery is a continuation of the subclavian artery?
Axillary artery
Where does the subclavian artery finish?
Lateral border of the first rib
Behind (deep to) the clavicle
What artery is a continuation of the axillary artery?
Brachial artery
When does the axillary artery finish?
Becomes brachial artery in the same horizontal line as the 4th rib
What side of the arm does the axillary/brachial artery run down?
Medial (inner) side of arm
What does the brachial artery turn into?
Bifurcates in to the radial and ulnar arteries
When do the radial and ulnar arteries begin?
Antecubital fossa
- This is the soft bit on the inside of your elbow
Which is more superficial, the radial or ulnar arteries?
Radial artery is more superficial
What pulses do we look for on the upper limb?
Brachial pulse
Radial pulse
Describe where the Radial pulse is found
Proximal to wrist joint, on the radial side of the flexor surface of the wrist & the lateral to the tendon of the flexor carpi radialis
Describe where the brachial pulse is found
Antecubital fossa, medial to the biceps tendon
What arteries arise from the bottom of the aorta?
Left & right common iliac
What arteries arise from teh common iliac arteries?
Internal & external iliac
What artery arises from the external iliac artery?
Common femoral
this splits quickly and is quite short
What arteries arise from the common femoral?
Deep & superficial femoral
The superficial femoral artery eventually becomes the ________
Popliteal artery
What arteries branch off the popliteal artery?
Anterior & posterior tibial
What artery gives rise to the Dorsalis pedis artery?
Anterior tibial
Describe the course of the Superficial femoral artery down the leg
Runs down the inner thigh before bending and running to the back of the femur
Once it arrives at the femur, it becomes the popliteal artery
What group of arteries split off the popliteal artery in the Popliteal fossa (back of the knee)?
Genicular arteries
When does the popliteal artery split into the anterior & posterior tibial arteries?
Just below the Popliteal fossa (back of knee)
Describe the course of the posterior tibial artery
Runs posterior to the tibia funnily enough
Continues down and enters the sole of the foot inferior to the medial malleolus (malleolus = bony projection on the side of your ankles)
Ie the left PT aa will enter the sole of the foot inferior to the medial (right) malleolus of the left foot
What pulses can be palpated on the lower limbs?
Femoral
Popliteal
Posterior tibial
Dorsalis pedis
Describe where the femoral pulse is located
Inferior to inguinal ligament, half way between the anterior superior iliac spine and the symphysis pubis (mid inguinal point)
Describe where the popliteal pulse is located
Behind the knee joint (popliteal fossa)
Describe where the Posterior tibial pulse is located
Behind and about 2cm below the medial malleolus
Describe where the dorsalis pedis pulse is located
On the dorsum of the foot, lateral to tendon of the extensor hallucis longus (the tendon to the big toe)
In groove between 1st and 2nd metatarsals
