Cutaneous Sensory Innervation of the Face Flashcards
What are the nerve branches in the sensory innervation of the face?
- trigeminal nerve (cranial nerve 5)
2. facial nerve (cranial nerve 7)
This is most complex cranial nerve?
trigeminal nerve
The trigeminal nerve arises from where?
the pons
What are the branches of the trigeminal nerve?
- ophthalamic nerve
- maxillary nerve
- mandibular nerve
What is the trigeminal nerve responsible for?
- sensory innervation of the skin sinuses and mucous membranes in the face
- Also enervates muscles of mastication
What does the ophthalmic nerve do?
sends signals from the upper part of the face including the scalp, forehead and nose
What does the maxillary nerve do?
sends sensory information from the middle part of the face such as the cheeks, upper lip, lower eyelid, nasal cavity and upper part of the oral cavity
What does the mandibular branch do?
has both sensory and motor component
Sensory component- sends information from lower part of face like chin, lower lips, and lower teeth
Motor component- moves the muscles of mastication
Where is the mesencephalic trigeminal nucleus located?
mesopontine junction
What is the role of the mesencephalic trigeminal nucleus?
biting force by sensing movement of the teeth
What does the mesencephalic trigeminal nucleus contain?
primary afferent fibers and proprioceptors that enervate the muscles of mastication
Where is the principal trigeminal nucleus found?
lateral portion of the pons
What is the sensory role of the principal trigeminal nucleus?
touch and pressure sensation
What is the motor role of the principal trigeminal nucleus?
mastication
Where is the spinal nucleus of the trigeminal nerve located?
lateral medulla of the brainstem
