Culture Media Flashcards
Eg of liquid media
Brain heart infusion broth , peptone water, nutrient broth
Examples of solid medium
Nutrient agar
blood agar
chocolate agar
How is chocolate agar made
Heating a mixture of she blood and nutrient agar
It is used to grow fastidious organism including influenza
n meningitis
N gonorrhea
Pneumococcas
Examples of simple media
Non nutrient agar and nutrient agar
What is a nutrient broth
Newton brought consist of meat extract peptone sodium chloride and water
What is a complex media
The complex media have added ingredients for special purposes
or
for bringing out certain characteristics or
for providing special nutrients required for growth of bacterium
What are synthetic or defined media
These media are prepared from your chemical substances and the exact composition of medium is fully documented
What are enriched media
To cultivate bacteria with exacting nutritional requirement substances such as blood serum or egg
Eg of enriched media
Todd Hewitt broth
What is enrichment media
These media are used to suppressed other bacteria while allowing the pathogen to remain viableand grow it is used for sample to isolate diarheagenicb bacteria
Examples of enrichment media
Tetrathionate broth- inhibits coliforms, allows typhoid bacilli
Selenite F for dysentery
What is selective media
If any inhibiting substance is added to solid medium it enables greater number of required bacteria to form colonies than other bacteria
Eg of selective media
Desoxycholate citrate medium for dysentery bacilli
What is indicator medium
These media contains an indicator which changes colour when a bacterium grows in them
Eg of indicator medium
- Incorporation of sulphite in Wilson and blair medium
What happens?
S typhi converts sulphite to sulphide in presence of glucose and it has black metallic sheen - Potassium tellurite in MacLeod medium is reduced to metallic tellurium by diphtheria bacillus
