Multiple cultures existing in the same geographical area.
There are even subcultures within this that work as smaller groups.

Biomedical View
Western medicine that is science based.
Disease & injury can be fixed by meds, surgery, treatments
Is it ok for western medicine to shit on other types of healing?
No. If anything we need to make sure they can coincide.
Magicorelgious meaning
Cross?
How to handle this?
Health is related to committing sins or going against will of God. Only way to fix health is to pray and ask for forgiveness.
An item like the cross may be seen as an icon of importance to them. Some people can just have a lucky item they like too.
We should respect their views but explain that the western meds and their beliefs can co-exist together. We should never shame them for their beliefs because we don’t want to push them away.
Explain Holistic practices
What groups practice this
Emotional, mental, physical, spiritual branches needing balance to achieve health
Asians & middle eastern cultures
Herbalism
Pros?
Cons?
Using herbal remedies for health & it can be passed down from generation to generation
It can have a basis
But need to warn people that this can be harmful (especially if using western medicine as well).
What is coining?
How should you approach this or any other practice?
More of a herbal method (not herbal but it does sort of fit in that alternative realm of care)
A coin is scraped against the skin that leaves markings BUT overall it isn’t harmful. It is meant to pull out any negative energy.
We need to be nonjudgemental. We don’t want to risk them turning away from care
What meds should we be asking patients about them taking?
Prescribed meds, OTC, and topical!! And supplements
Should we assume everyone’s alternative remedies is because of a distrust for western meds?
No we shouldn’t. Some people do it because its cheaper or they’ve had a bad experience. If we ask, maybe we can help them fix this issue.
How common are alternative methods?
Fairly common & growing.
So we should be aware of these to implement them in our own practice
Can t’ai chi and yoga be helpful?
Yes. Strength, flexibility, mental health
Other forms of alternative therapies?
Accupuncture
Aromatherapy
Music therapy
Why is it important we know our own beliefs and cultures
Because if we know our own biases, we can control them & it helps us develop that relationship & we may even get to learn something from them.
Our beliefs do not trump theirs.
