What is culture?
The way of life for a particular society, including the beliefs, knowledge, faith, language, customs etc.
What does MEAD’s study of different cultures show us?
Arapesh tribe - both males and females were gentle and cooperative
Tchambuli tribe - gender roles reversed
What are norms?
Expected patterns of behaviour based on the values of a culture e.g. Wearing uniform to school
What are values?
Beliefs and ideas that society sees as important e.g. Educational achievement
What is cultural diversity?
The differences in a culture. It can be intercultural diversity between cultures or intracultural diversity within cultures.
What is a subculture?
A culture within the wider culture with their own set of norms and values e.g. Youth subcultures (punks, mods, rockers etc.)
What is cultural hybridity?
The merging of two or more things e.g. Brasians (black Asians)
What is high culture?
The cultural products and activities associated with a higher status. They often represent the highest achievements in humanity e.g. Shakespeare plays
What is popular culture?
The products and activities enjoyed by the majority of the population e.g. Watching BGT
What is consumer culture?
We have a consumer culture based on the increasing availability of goods and consumption of services, as a result there is debt that is now considered acceptable as a result
What is a global culture?
Trend of cultural products or activities that become universal e.g. Brands, food etc. which interconnects the worlds.

Driven by industry (multinational companies) travel, a globally accessible media and the internet.
BORDIEU “ CULTURAL CAPITAL”
Knowledges, attitudes, skills, education and advantages a person has giving them a higher status in society.
NAYAK “ WHITE WANNABES”
Young white w.c makes adopting black culture, style and language, they listen to hip-hop or gangsta rap.
