Business culture varies in different countries -Authority, attitude to work and leisure, beliefs, traditions, individual and community goals, source of status Cultural Norms: affected by: -Family -Education -Mass media -Heritage -Government -Membership of specific groups
Organisational Culture
-Refers to beliefs, values and attitudes -Affected by events of the past and climate of the present Determined by: -Philosophy of the founders -Type of business and the character of the industry -Interpersonal relationships -Management style/control mechanisms -Character of the area it’s located in -Structure
Analysing culture
-The Cultural Web: shows behavioural, physical and symbolic manifestations of a culture that inform and are informed by the taken-for-granted assumptions of an organisation -The assumptions are the collective experiences and opinions of stakeholders, internal and external
Cultural Web (Johnson et al., 2006)
-Stories: narratives told by people -Symbols: aspects of life that symbolise something, eg position in company, rewards -Power Structures: powerful sects may be closely associated with the core assumptions and beliefs -Organisational Structures: reflect power within an organisation and show important roles and relationships -Control Systems: measurement and reward systems that emphasis what is important to monitor in the organisation -Rituals and Routines: procedures the company has, activities which emphasis what’s important

Incubator: Equal treatment, employee focused
Guided missle: Project-oriented, equal treatment
Family: Personal, face to face relationship
Eiffel Tower: Structured, hierarchal
