Material culture
Physical or tangible creations that members of a society make, use and share. Derived from nature
Culture
The knowledge, language, values and customs that are passed from person to person or generation, in a human group or society
Non material culture
Consists of the abstract or intangible human creations of society that influence behavior
Ex: tradition faith
Cultural universals
Customs and practiced that occur across all societies.
Care over appearance, group and young,activities, social institutions, customary practices(cooking)
Language
Key systems of symbols that express ideas and enabled people to think and communicate with eachother
Fundamental to our understanding
How we understand and experience life
Values
Collective ideas about what is right or wrong in a particular culture. Work toward defining a cultures world view
Beliefs
Mental acceptance or conviction that certain things are true or real
Norms
Established rules of behavior or standards
Prescriptive-what we should do
Proscriptive- what we shouldn’t do
Can be formal or informal
