What is Organizational Culture?
Organizational Culture is accumulate learning of the organization. Creates internal cohesion, adapts to external environment, and is shared beliefs of a group of people.
What are Norms and Values?
Norms and Values are informal rules, standards, or ideals.
What are Artifacts?
Artifacts are visual, tangible, or audible objects/entities that reflect values and norms.
What are Symbols?
Symbols are artifacts that are imbued w/ additional meaning.
What are Assumptions?
Assumptions are taken-for-granted truths that can be difficult to identify.
Social Learning Theory (Direct and Indirect Learning)
Direct learning is costly and is done through self-exposure. Indirect learning is through observation of others and consequences, modeling and imitation through social interactions.
Social Learning Theory (Selection of Models)
The learner selects a model that is likeable, prestigious, dominant, successful and observes / adopts the behaviors of said model.
Social Learning Theory (Social Learning and Norm Formation)
High status individuals are likely to be modeled after. Norms develop when same behavior of model is adopted by separate individuals. Policies that reward or sanction behaviors direct the social learning process.
What is Attraction-Selection-Attrition Theory
Goals of the founder influenced by values and personality. Cultures form to reflect these values and objectives. Interpersonal attraction results in like-minded people being select and attrition of non-likeminded peoples.
What is Dual Inheritance Theory?
Dual Inheritance Theory is the idea that we pass on our genes as a species, but also we pass on our collective culture. Culture is an additional layer through which information is spread that can be incredibly important. This information is internalized and validated through time.
What is Dominance?
Dominance is authority that can lead to status.
What is Prestige?
Prestige is gained through ‘earned’ status.
