Cultural variations - AO3 Flashcards
1
Q
What are two PECs of cultural variations?
A
- P: Strength = indigenous researchers
- E: Van IJ. and K study: researchers worked within their own cultures, avoids translation barriers
- C: However, this is not true of all cross cultural research; Tronick et al (1992) study of Efe tribe
- S: So data from some studies may invalid due to bias or issues with cross cultural communication
- P: Strength = meta analysis - large sample size
- E: Almost 2000 PPs in van IJ and K study so likely to have population validity (representative)
- C: However, limited number of studies from some cultures; only one in UK, China and Israel
- S: So findings may not generalise to ssaid cultures; not representative, particularly given 150% variation within cultures

Q
What is a limitation of cultural bias?
A
P: Limitation = imposed ethic
E: Strange situation has imposed ethic as desgined in Western culture; observed behaviours may mean different things in other cultures
E: In the UK/USA, lack of affection on reunion abnormal bu tin Germany behaviour likely to be seen as independence
L: So comparing behaviours in strange situation across cultures may be meaningless
