Q

What is a strength of Lorenz’s study?

A
  • P: Strength = support for imprinting
  • E: Guiton (1966)
  • C: Guiton able to “reverse” imprinting in chickens that initially tried to mate wiht gloves; able to enage in normal sexual behaviour with other chickens after spending time without own species
  • S: This means that alternate research challenges validity of Lorenz’s findings

Q

What is a limitation of Lorenz’s study?

A
  • P: Limitation = generalisabilty to humans
  • E: What applies to non - human species may not also apply to human infants (esp. birds vs mammals)
  • E: Difference in nature and complexity of the bnd while mammals more two-way attachment
  • L: This means that research may not be generalisable

Q

What are two limitations of Harlow’s research?

A
  • P: Limitation = confounding variables
  • E: IV = cloth vs wire BUT, monkey bonds were also different
  • E: One looked much more like a monkey’s face, may instead be why baby preffered cloth covered mother
  • L: This means that findings may lack internal validity
  • P: Limitation = ethical issues (protection from harm)
  • E: Studies caused severe and long term distress to monkeys due to separation from mother
  • E: Findings also cannot be generalised due to psychological differences. Cost benefit analysis - cost outweighed the benefit
  • L: Therefore, lack of generalisability means ehtical cost cannot be justified
