Cultural Factors Flashcards
Cultural factors for veteran client
May feel uncomfortable sharing negative emotions or being vulnerable.
I would use psychoeducation, a slowed pace and empathy to avoid rupture.
Cultural factors for clients with higher SES
May feel guilt for “complaining.”
I would validate the client’s concerns and empathically challenge these thoughts
Cultural factors for clients with history of invalidation
May feel that I am invalidating their thoughts by challenging them. I would use normalizing and validation to validate her feeling and assure her that her thoughts are common.
I would provide space for them to express their concerns.
Cultural factor for client who has never been to therapy
Because client has never been to therapy, it may be difficult for her to open up. I would be mindful of this and take interventions slowly and empathically work with any resistance.
Cultural factors for African American clients
As an AA, client may have had experiences with medical professionals minimizing their challenges.
I would be aware of this and allow the client space to express their concerns while validating them.
Cultural factors for PMR
Some cultures have certain expectations for health professionals and the techniques they use. I would allow space for the client to express any hesitancy toward this intervention and deal with any resistance empathically and with understanding.
