the continuum
Refusing to allow someone to use their language at work or school - aimed at destroying a certain culture
Refusal to alter the dress code policy to allow for cultural and spiritual practices (Not being able to wear a conservative swimsuit on the beach)
Making the policies so strict and stringent so as to preclude a specific culture from seeking care at your facility (We will provide language access but we will make it so difficult to get your language you won’t come back – making one set of culture go out of their way to make them not want to come)
cultural destructiveness
Actively trying to keep someone from expressing their culture
CULTURAL DESTRUCTIVENESS
Discriminating within hiring practices or promotion (We wont promote that culture because they don’t work hard) Lack of ability to respond effectively to culturally and linguistically diverse groups
Allocating more resources to one group over another
Messages that that culture is not welcomed
Lowered expectations for a certain culture (Letting them practice but not treating them fairly)
cultural incapacity
parenting classes: this culture are terrible parents so we have to give them more education
cultural incapacity example
Lack of cultural training
Lack of diversity
Policies that encourage assimilation (Bring someone into your culture and they forget their culture so they can fit into your culture best)
cultural blindness
pretending cultural differences don’t exist
treating everyone exactly the same – equal is different than the same
cultural blindness example
Awareness of areas for growth and strength
Committed to civil rights
Efforts to improve service delivery
Token representation
precompetence
