what is culteral blindness
The belief that race, culture and ethnicity make no difference and that all people are essentially the same, and what is appropriate for one culture should be appropriate for all.
what is culture?
the way we think and view the world around us, how we behave and make judgements/ decisions, thought to be intrinsic from childhood although not genetically inherited, can be a way of life, linked to a persons heritage or background.
what are some ways that culture may be observed?
day to day activities, worship, language, diet, art and music, humor, education, clothing, gender roles and life expereinces
what are some non-visible aspects of culture?
beliefs, values, ethics, perceptions, expections.
what are the perceptions of health?
body language, healthcare system, expressing pain, faith, higher powers, being in control, human body and expectations
what is cultural competence
Behaviours, attitudes and policies that enables effective working in cross-cultural situations.

culteral awareness, cultural desire, cultural knowledge, cultural skill, cultural encounters.
what is culteral awareness?
The ability of the practitioner to be self-aware of their own culture, biases and prejudices.

The motivation of practitioners to develop cultural competency.

The process of seeking to understand the patient’s health beliefs - how individuals
interpret illness and how it guides thinking and

The ability to collect relevant cultural information from patients with health complaints.

The process of the practitioner engaging with patients from culturally diverse backgrounds.
what is culteral safety?
Whether a patient feels comfortable and culturally safe is dependent on the health
professional to:
Develop trust with their patient.
Be aware of power imbalances.
Have clear, open and respectful communication.
Understand how racism and discrimination have resulted in inequalities.
Appreciate how their own culture, gender, religion, values and beliefs may impact the
health encounter or experience for the patient.
what does it mean to encourage discussion.
Health professionals should encourage discussion of cultural and religious beliefs which may influence the health behaviours, choices and preferences of patients in their care.
