What is the cultivation theory?
Because TV contains so much violence, people who spend more time watching TV develop an exaggerated belief in a ‘mean and scary world’. The violence they see on the screen can cultivate a social paranoia that counters notions of trustworthy people or safe surrounding.
What is Gerbners concern that is talked about in the cultivation theory?
He was concerned that it affects viewers beliefs about the world around them and their feelings connected to those beliefs. (NOT by encouraging aggressive behavior).
What is the difference between TV then and TV now? What is the same
- It is much more recorded;e
- TV can be mobile
- today provides many choices
But, many messages we receive through TV have not.

Scholarship that involves careful, systematic study of all TV content, usually employing content analysis as a research method.

Coding of Health and Media Project analyzed television shows. This research was designed to uncover exactly how violence was depicted on TV.

Research that examines whether those who spend more time watching TV are more likely to see the “real world” through TV’s lens.
