• tension: tensions had grown between russias assertive peaceful competition and kennedys promise to be tough on russia. this includes the space race, the arms race, the nuclear testing and american funding of anti communists in laos and vietnam
• fidel castros cuba: 1959, castro took power in cuba. this was very threatening to the usa because cuba is only 100 miles from the USA. in 1960 castro made a trade agreement with the USSR to send sugar to russia and russia would send oil back. in 1960 USA stopped all trade con cuba
• the bay of pigs: in april 1961 the CIA encouraged funded and transported anti castro cuban exiles to invade cuba. this failed miserably. castro asked for weapons to defend itself against america in september 1961.
